Jon Voight's Plan to 'Rescue Hollywood'

India knowledge       Tuesday, May 6, 2025

Jon Voight, appointed by President Donald Trump as a "special ambassador" for Hollywood, has unveiled a plan aimed at revitalizing the U.S. film industry. Voight shared that he has been in discussions with Trump to tackle issues like job losses and the relocation of film productions abroad. In a video message, he confirmed that Trump is committed to making Hollywood "great again," offering a comprehensive strategy that includes federal tax incentives, revisions to the tax code, co-production treaties, and infrastructure subsidies to bring more film production back to the U.S.

Voight's plan also proposes a 100% tariff on foreign-made films, a move aimed at addressing what Trump considers a national security threat due to the impact on domestic productions. The strategy has sparked varied reactions. U.S. unions have largely supported initiatives that would boost domestic jobs and production, while international partners, particularly in Australia and the UK, have expressed concern about potential harm to their film industries.

Voight's plan emphasizes the need for collaboration across unions, studios, and streaming services to preserve jobs in Hollywood. The proposal's specifics on how to define what qualifies as a “foreign” film are still unclear, and the broader impact on global film production remains to be seen.
