Teams are not permitted to repurchase a player they released using an RTM (Right to Match) card during the IPL mini-auction.
Prior to IPL 2014, the RTM card option was made available at the mega auction. Before the 2018 Indian Premier League, it was kept for the next big auction, but it was thrown out before the 2022 season. At previous mega auctions, a maximum of three RTM cards were permitted.
How does RTM operate ?
- A participant joins the pool for the auction.
- Franchises continue to bid.
- After the auction concludes and the highest bid is verified, the auctioneer looks at the player's previous team.
- The franchise is asked if it would like to use its RTM card.
- If they accept, they match the highest bid and get the player back at that sum.
- Importantly, RTM does not offer a price cap or a discount. The value is still determined by the market.
The Counter- Bid Rule
Last Year, the IPL introduced a twist
- After a team uses RTM, the franchise that made the highest bid is allowed to raised the bid once more.
- The original team can then choose whether to match again
